Premier League: Grant's Pompey beaten, City held..

New Portsmouth boss Avram Grant's management career picked up where it left off as his side lost to Manchester United amid penalty drama.

United ran out 4-1 winners at Fratton Park despite a spirited showing from the home side, with the visitors taking the lead from a Wayne Rooney penalty on 25 minutes. Antonio Valencia had broken away on the counter and, when he found Rooney in the area, Michael Brown brought the striker down in the area.

Portsmouth were level seven minutes later, though, when referee Mike Dean pointed to the penalty spot after his assistant spotted Nemanja Vidic tugging on Frederic Piquionne's shirt. United protested furiously, but - after missing from the spot against Stoke the previous weekend - Kevin-Prince Boateng made no mistake as he fired the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak.

But United were back ahead within three minutes of the restart when Ryan Giggs played a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Rooney, who slotted beyond Asmir Begovic. United then benefited from the third penalty of the game when Piquionne brought down Giggs just inside the area and Rooney stepped up to complete his hat-trick.

Giggs made it 4-1 when he curled a free-kick around the wall into the bottom corner. Substitute John Utaka then saw a fine effort tipped onto the bar in the dying moments to sum up an unfortunate day for Pompey's new manager.

Grant was taking charge of a team for the first time since Chelsea's dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to United in the 2008 Champions League final.

Manchester City continued their run of draws in the league as they were held 1-1 againstHull at the City of Manchester Stadium.

City broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when Carlos Tevez went on the attack and supplied Shaun Wright-Phillips, whose speculative shot was diverted into the bottom corner from Anthony Gardner's head.

However, City failed to extend their advantage and they paid the price when Hull were awarded a penalty as Joleon Lescott appeared to handball before Kolo Toure brought down Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Jimmy Bullard, who had scored from the spot against West Ham last weekend, smashed the ball home before the visitors celebrated by recreating the scene of Phil Brown's famous team-talk at the ground the previous season.

The result meant Mark Hughes had to settle for a point for the seventh game in succession.

West Ham came out 5-3 winners in an astonishing match against Burnley at Upton Park.

Jack Collison had put the Hammers ahead on 18 minutes as he slotted home following Scott Parker's quick free-kick, and Junior Stanislas made it 2-0 from Guille Franco's pass after half an hour.

Things got worse for Owen Coyle two minutes before the interval when Carlton Cole converted a penalty after Robbie Blake had fouled Jonathan Spector, and it was 4-0 six minutes into the second half when Stanislas turned provider for Franco as the Mexican headed home.

West Ham had their fifth on 63 minutes as goalkeeper Brian Jensen fouled Luis Jimenez in the area, and the on-loan Inter Milan attacker stepped up to extend his team's advantage. The offside flag then spared Jensen as he brought down Zavon Hines in the box, and Burnley started to make amends as Steven Fletcher was left with a simple finish from Chris Eagles' cross.

The duo repeated the feat on 68 minutes as Fletcher again scored from Eagles' cross to make it 5-2, and the drama continued into injury time. First, Steven Caldwell was dismissed for a foul on Hines, but Burnley continued to narrow the gap as Eagles made it 5-3 from Tyrone Mears' pull-back.

Fulham were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw as they hosted struggling Bolton at Craven Cottage.

Fulham had looked in control in the early stages, but Ivan Klasnic took advantage of a poor clearance from Brede Hangeland on 35 minutes to fire in a fine effort, sparking an impressive spell as they looked to extend their advantage before the break.

However, Roy Hodgson took off defender John Paintsil for midfielder Simon Davies on 68 minutes as he looked to force an equaliser and the more attacking approach paid off as Damian Duff picked up a pass from Erik Nevland out wide before firing into the far corner.

Roberto Martinez got the better of predecessor Steve Bruce as Wigan came out of their game against Sunderland at the DW Stadium with a 1-0 win.

Jason Scotland hit the post on 25 minutes, but there was little else to get excited about in a quiet first half. Yet Wigan went some way towards atoning for their record 9-1 defeat at Tottenham the previous week as Hugo Rodallega took advantage of a mistake from Paolo da Silva to get the only goal of the game.

Blackburn and Stoke played out a 0-0 draw at Ewood Park. Chris Samba had a chance to win the match in injury time as he rose to meet Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner, but he put his header wide.

Rooney hits hat-trick in humbling

'' I'm coming on, you have it. ''

'' Yea. Here you are, eat this. '' Rooney

'' That's me!! My time is now. ''

Man Utd's Wayne Rooney slots home from the penalty spot.

Avram Grant's reign at Chelsea ended with defeat on penalties to Manchester United and his first game in charge of Portsmouth saw Red Devils forward Wayne Rooney score two crucial spot-kicks within his hat-trick at Fratton Park.

Grant, who has taken over from Paul Hart and will be rubber-stamped as manager next week when paperwork is completed, could not have asked for a tougher opening game than against the Premier League champions but there was hope of a result when Kevin-Prince Boateng levelled, also with a penalty.

Sir Alex Ferguson served the first half of his two-match touchline ban for criticising referee Alan Wiley and he may ask why Mike Dean awarded Pompey their penalty - but he will have no complaints with the way Rooney wrapped up the points after the break. Ryan Giggs added the fourth late on.

Grant and Ferguson last faced each other 18 months ago during the Champions League final in Moscow when John Terry lost his footing in the penalty shoot-out and Chelsea let the European crown slip away.

There was a downpour on this occasion too. This time Grant was in charge of a team that started the weekend bottom of the league and three points from their nearest rivals, while Ferguson was looking to gain ground on leaders Chelsea.

If Pompey have a fighting chance of staying up Grant will need the players left over from a fire sale over the last year - but he was denied the service of England goalkeeper David James due to a calf injury and Asmir Begovic started.

For United, it was a case of whether Ferguson's absence in the dressing room would be a factor, although he had communication lines in place to assistant Mike Phelan and was hoping the din at Pompey's "rickety'' stadium would not drown him out.

Sat next to chief executive David Gill in the directors' box, Ferguson saw his side enjoy plenty of possession early on and press when the hosts were on the ball.

Paul Scholes had the first effort of the match, firing over when Giggs rolled a corner to the edge of the penalty area where his team-mate was left unmarked.

Pompey threatened within a minute and Tomasz Kuszczak, in because Edwin van der Sar had a knock to his knee, was required to block bravely when a ball was lobbed over the top of United's defence and found Aruna Dindane.

Encouraged by this opening, Dindane also fired wide from long distance and headed off-target when unmarked from Jamie O'Hara's cross. O'Hara himself had an effort tipped over after Frederic Piquionne nodded in his direction on the edge of the area.

Despite the Pompey attacks, United were ahead in the 25th minute through Rooney.

Antonio Valencia burst forward and exchanged passes with Rooney, and when the winger pulled the ball back for his team-mate in the penalty area, the England forward waited for a clumsy challenge to arrive from Michael Brown.

Dean pointed to the spot immediately and Rooney tucked away the penalty.

Pompey were level, however, on the half-hour mark, although why Dean awarded it was open to debate. Kuszczak climbed above Piquionne, who appeared to have his shirt pulled by Nemanja Vidic.

With United in shock, Boateng smashed in the penalty after missing against Stoke last time out.

Pompey enjoyed a spell of pressure before the break but United were ahead three minutes after the restart.

There was nothing controversial about this effort, just Giggs weighting the ball perfectly through Pompey's defence for Rooney to place his finish home, his 10th of the season for United.

His hat-trick came in the 54th minute, from the penalty spot. Piquionne was penalised for fouling Giggs - and Rooney sent Begovic the wrong way from 12 yards.

Valencia could have added to the goals when he waltzed through the Pompey defence.

Boateng had Pompey's best chance to get back in the game but he fired over from a promising position, and there would be no way back for Grant's men.

Giggs netted with a free-kick three minutes from full-time for their fourth goal, while John Utaka hit the crossbar with a scissors-kick at the death for Pompey.

When it comes to club wear, it's not always what you wear. It's how you wear it. Choose clothing that allows you to radiate confidence. Consider the type of club you are planning on choosing. The atmosphere of the club itself will often dictate your club-wear decisions.

Select night club clothing colors that reflect your personality and goals. Choosing bright colors in a dark club will be sure to get you noticed. If blending in with the rest of the crowd is more your style, then consider purchasing club wear with solid prints and darker tones. Ladies, if nightclubs are a regular stop over your weekends, you'll need to put together a wardrobe complete with the range of women’s clubwear. jeans and a t-shirt just won't cut it. Most nightclubs enforce a dress code. And if there's one inmportant rule, it's that you've got to dress to impress.

If your evening includes stopping at an uptown dance bar, you might want to consider choosing a classy club wear dress.
