Ten-man Chelsea fall to United

Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea future is in serious doubt after his side crashed out of the Champions League at Manchester United, leaving Roman Abramovich with the taste of European failure on his lips for another season.
As Sir Alex Ferguson has noted, Abramovich is obsessed by winning this competition but with the Russian looking on from the directors' box, United emerged triumphant, Javier Hernandez and Park Ji-Sung finding the net either side of half-time.
Ancelotti insisted he is under no pressure to play Fernando Torres before the game, but the misfiring Spaniard began Wednesday's match, before being replaced at half-time by Didier Drogba after another ineffective performance.
Torres has now failed to score in 11 Chelsea games, but Drogba continues to look a threat and briefly threatened to derail United after grabbing an equaliser shortly after Ramires was sent off.
It was a false dawn, however, and Chelsea are staring down the barrel of a trophyless season, with Ancelotti likely to be in the firing line if Abramovich decides to pull the trigger.
No-one could accuse the Italian of shirking the big decision and it was true that Chelsea's first-half performance was vastly superior to their efforts at Stamford Bridge six days ago.
Torres glanced an early header wide after climbing above Rio Ferdinand, who was hampered by an injury that did not prove serious enough to force him off.
Nicolas Anelka was narrowly wide with a half-volley that came about as a direct result of a Torres mis-hit and when the Frenchman intercepted a poor clearance by Nemanja Vidic, it looked like he would get a clear sight of goal until Edwin van der Sar robbed him with a perfectly executed slide tackle.
With Ramires the driving force in midfield, it seemed only a matter of time before Chelsea were back on level terms and they certainly should have been when Florent Malouda raced into the box, then teed up Frank Lampard with a perfectly weighted square ball. But the midfielder's finish was not good enough and he was unable to beat Van der Sar.
But with Vidic and Ferdinand standing firm, United survived, allowing Wayne Rooney to cause mayhem at the other end. Operating in a deep role just behind Hernandez, Rooney -more than anyone - dictated the pace of the Red Devils' play.
It was the England striker, who will be suspended on Saturday when United tackle City in a Manchester derby FA Cup semi-final, who fizzed over the cross from which Hernandez thought he had put the hosts in front, only to be flagged offside.
The call was tight, equally as debatable as the one that followed in the final minute of the half as United took the lead. Much has been made of how good this present Ferguson team actually is and so often it is derided for lacking stardust.
But they certainly gain from Giggs' vast experience and when Nani's free-kick ended up being shunted back to the right flank from which it had been delivered, John O'Shea set his 37-year-old team-mate scampering into the box with an inspired reverse pass.
He took his time, looked up and delivered the ball low to the far post, where Hernandez arrived at exactly the right moment to slide it into the roof of the Chelsea net.
At half-time, Ancelotti withdrew his shot-shy striker and introdued Drogba. The Ivorian almost levelled within a minute of the restart, just failing to find the target with a near-post flick.
A man on a mission, Drogba then whipped round Ferdinand and lashed a low 20-yard drive narrowly wide. And, after Ramires had been handed a second booking for a needless foul on Nani, it was Drogba who refused to let Chelsea surrender, drilling through Van der Sar's legs to breathe new hope into the visitors' challenge.
Unfortunately for the striker, as quickly as it arrived, it was snuffed out as Giggs chipped a glorious pass to Park, who fired gleefully into the bottom corner to send United into the last four, where they will almost certainly meet German challengers Schalke.

Don't be subconscious !

Suddenly, Randy Orton’s music interrupted and out walked Orton sporting an over-sized t-shirt covering his torso. Cena sold disbelief at the interruption from Orton, who entered the ring with something to say about the WWE Title situation. Orton told Cena that with all due respect, he thinks any business that Cena had at WrestleMania has already been settled. He said Cena can blame The Rock and make matches for Mania next year, but the fact is…Cena lost. Orton said he thinks Cena should step aside and let someone like him, who actually won at WrestleMania, have an opportunity.

Cena began to reply, but John Morrison’s music interrupted. Morrison, in street clothes, marched to the ring with some business of his own to attend to. Morrison shot them a smile before addressing the situation. He said he’s seen this show before with Cena and Orton arguing over the #1 contender. Morrison said if there’s going to be a discussion about who’s next in line for the WWE Title, this discussion has to involve him.
Next with the interruption was Vickie Guerrero, who brought Dolph Ziggler to the ring with her. Vickie said someone new should have a title opportunity, but not Morrison. Vickie reminded Morrison she pinned him in a match a couple of weeks ago. She said the person who should be next in line should be…her. “Okay, okay, if it’s not me, then it should be Dolph Ziggler,” she said. Dolph said he didn’t come to Raw to waste time with Snooki and it’s obvious he’s the most talented in the ring. More importantly, he’s never faced Miz for the title, so the line starts with him. Ziggler told them that once he gets a title shot, they’ll all get a shot.
Next to interrupt was R-Truth, who hasn’t been on TV in a few weeks. Cole heeled on Truth, who made his way to the ring as Orton did some knee-bends to keep himself loose in the ring. Truth had to think about what city he was in before asking Bridgeport what’s up. Truth said the gospel truth is that he has never, never gotten a one-on-one WWE Title match. “Well, there’s a reason why,” Ziggler said under his breath. Mock bickering began, then the Raw GM buzzed in.
Cole stood up to announce an email he received from the GM on his iPad. He said everyone has made a compelling argument, so to end all of this, he’s going to give all five of them a chance to earn it. Please not Beat the Clock. Cole said the GM has come up with a new concept playing up the gauntlet. Two men start. This continues until all five have been in the match. The last man standing faces Miz for the WWE Title at Extreme Rules.
Randy Orton was the first man out. Mathews noted Orton has to survive four other men to become #1 contender. Dolph Ziggler, flanked by Vickie Guerrero, was out next.

RANDY ORTON vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER (w/Vickie Guerrero) — #1 Contender Five-man Gauntlet match
Miz had plenty of talking time on the four-man commentary booth while Mathews mainly handled play-by-play. Orton absorbed Ziggler’s early offense, then spiked Ziggler with his trademark DDT from the second rope. Orton pounded the mat looking for the RKO, but New Nexus members Davie Otunga and McGillicutty stormed the ring apron to distract Orton. Ziggler then rolled up Orton from behind to score a pin. Post-match: Mason Ryan joined Otunga and Mike in the ring. Ryan blasted Orton with an emphatic powerbomb before Nexus stood over Orton. Miz smiled. They faded to commercial with Nexus standing tall over Ziggler.

WINNER: Ziggler at 2:37.

'' Am peace or rocker? ''  BERBATOV
'' Hey hey. That's my ball. I can't share with you. Go away! '' Berbatov
'' Dance dance dance with the ball! '' Nani
'' Ball is flying inside to the net. Don't upset, player! '' Valencia
'' Push me, please. I want to fly higher than the ball ''  Nani
'' Ball hits my head and then i hit your head. '' Chris
'' No . Ball is mine. It's trying to fly away. '' Owen

Nani stars in United win

There was no Grand National glory for Sir Alex Ferguson but Manchester United continue to power their own way towards the Premier League title.
First-half strikes from Dimitar Berbatov - his 22nd of the season - and Antonio Valencia with his first since August allowed United to surge ten points clear of nearest challengers Arsenal. And, if they can keep a steady course over the final six hurdles, United will achieve what Ferguson's Aintree hopeful What A Friend was unable to and finish ahead of the chasing pack.
In a football sense at least, it must be quite nice being Ferguson at the minute. Robbed of Wayne Rooney's services for a couple of games thanks, in his eyes, to some unjust treatment from the Football Association, the United boss could just pluck another striker from his impressive roster.
In this instance it was the Premier League's top scorer and a man who bagged five in one game earlier this season.
Berbatov had only started one league game since that dismal defeat at Wolves over two months ago, the equally miserable loss at Liverpool. On home soil at least though, the Bulgarian is a man to be trusted.
It did look like he was cursing when Nani ran into a crowd of Fulham defenders on the edge of the area instead of playing a simple pass to the flanks.
But, making a mockery of his absence from the seven-man shortlist for PFA player of the year, Nani squeezed a pass to Anderson, then flicked the return to his left for Berbatov.
TV replays indicated the striker was just offside. It was very tight though and Berbatov was not hanging around as he slotted his shot beyond Mark Schwarzer.
It was exactly what United were looking for so early in the contest and the points should have been wrapped up when Berbatov skipped past Carlos Salcido and Brede Hangeland by the touchline and burst into the box before rolling a pass back to Anderson. Goalscoring, though, is not the returning Brazilian's forte.
Back after a nine-match absence with a knee injury, Anderson never looked like improving a return of two goals in 121 previous appearances and dribbled a terrible effort wide.
United did get their second though, just after the half-hour when Schwarzer inexplicably raced to the touchline to try and make a clearance he was never going to manage given Nani had the speed to get there first.
The Portugal winger showed his selfish streak by going for goal himself rather than present Valencia with a tap-in.
Aaron Hughes did it instead, turning Nani's shot away with his head but merely offering Valencia the chance to nod home from two yards as a consequence.
It was Valencia's first goal since the Community Shield and his return to action from a major knee injury suffered one month later is another reason Ferguson has been rejoicing.
After an enterprising start, Fulham had been overwhelmed.
They retained enough spirit to bring an outstanding save from Tomasz Kuszczak, though, as substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen curled a shot goalwards from 25 yards.
It was a confusing piece of play all round as, from their angle, the Fulham fans thought it had gone in and referee Mike Jones awarded a goal-kick rather than the corner which would have been due reward for Kuszczak.
The game drifted onwards in such a mundane manner, Ferguson could have used the telephone installed in the directors' box to overcome communication problems during his five-match touchline ban to keep up with events at Liverpool.
He didn't though, limiting himself to a couple of conversations with coach Rene Meulensteen as he made the substitutions required to keep his players fresh for Tuesday's Champions League return.
Anderson and Berbatov were both denied by Schwarzer, the first after another uncharacteristic mistake from the veteran Australian.
By the end, even John O'Shea was trying his luck, advancing from his right-back role to let fly from the edge of the area.
Paul Scholes had a go as well. They were both out of luck - just as Ferguson had been - but as they approach a week that starts with that Champions League decider with Chelsea and ends at Wembley against Manchester City, the overall United picture is rosy indeed.

Rooney hands United advantage

Wayne Rooney was a TV star once more - this time for all the right reasons as his clinical first-half goal gave Manchester United a 1-0 Champions League triumph over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Rooney went into the quarter-final first-leg tie still not knowing what his punishment will be for the four-letter outburst at West Ham on Saturday.
But the uncertainty didn't affect him as he took full advantage of a superb piece of skill by Ryan Giggs to give United their first win at Stamford Bridge in 2002 and put them in pole position to reach the semi-final at Old Trafford next week.
Chelsea are not out of it. Indeed, a repeat of the 2-1 success on their last trip to Old Trafford 12 months ago will be enough to send through.
However, they will have to do far better in front of goal - and £50 million man Fernando Torres in particular must start scoring after yet another ineffective display ended with an injury-time yellow card for diving.
At Upton Park on Saturday, Rooney completed his hat-trick, then headed straight towards a TV camera to deliver his ill-advised reaction that threatens his place in the FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City.
As his first-time effort caressed the base of Petr Cech's left-hand post and rolled gently into the back of the Chelsea net, he again ran towards the lens.
This time, he stopped short, slid to his knees and waited to be mobbed by ecstatic team-mates. They had every right too, especially Ryan Giggs given his outrageous contribution.
Now 37, Ferguson has claimed the veteran Welshman could go on for a couple of years yet. How the United boss must hope that is true.
Having watched Michael Carrick deliver a pinpoint crossfield pass that was sensational in itself, Ferguson could only sit back and admire Giggs' sublime first touch, which took him careering past the stranded Jose Bosingwa, and the coolness of his second, which left Rooney with a tap-in.
Cue delirium amongst the United contingent, satisfaction for Rooney and the precious away goal Ferguson had demanded.
Carlo Ancelotti could only urge his team - who had started the brighter - into some kind of response. It should have come in the final minute of that opening period.
Didier Drogba went for goal from an acute angle but his shot lacked power. Torres closed in, yet somehow completely missed the ball from a central position on the edge of the six-yard area.
As the ball bounced back off the post, Frank Lampard went to tap home, only for Patrice Evra to clear off the line.
Given Saturday's draw at Stoke and Inter Milan's stunning demise to Schalke in the San Siro, it is hardly overestimating the situation to say Carlo Ancelotti's job hangs on reaching the final, and for that Torres needs to do what Roman Abramovich paid all that money for.
United suffered a hammer blow within minutes of the restart when Rafael went down after a seemingly innocuous tangle with Drogba.
The young Brazilian tried to continue but the pain in his left knee made it impossible, the stretcher carrying him away for what looks like a lengthy period.
Ferguson's response was typical. With no obvious right-back replacement, instead of introducing a defender, in Chris Smalling or Jonny Evans, he went for Nani, asking Antonio Valencia to plug the gap.
Chelsea were able to get up a head of steam though. Ramires wasted an excellent chance when he glanced Drogba's effort wide of the far post. The Ivorian himself was not too far away with a speculative overhead kick.
United's defence - which has not conceded an away goal in this competition this season - held firm and came agonisingly close to grabbing a second when Nani drilled a cross to the far post that would have allowed Javier Hernandez to head into an empty net had Cech not gambled in a desperate attempt to claw the ball away from the Mexican.
The departure of Drogba for Nicolas Anelka 20 minutes from time placed even more weight on Torres' shoulders just after Michael Essien had gone close for the hosts.
And the Liverpool man so nearly responded when he rose to meet Jose Bosingwa's far-post cross and sent a header curling towards the corner that Van der Sar, troubled by a groin problem, was at full stretch to claw away.
United then breathed a sigh of relief in stoppage time when Patrice Evra sent Ramires tumbling but referee Alberto Mallenco failed to award what seemed to be a clear penalty.
There was still time for a Torres yellow card for diving under Valencia's challenge, ending yet another unhappy night for the Spain star.

Fernando Torres with Chelsea: 9 games, 597 minutes, 0 goals. I think Fernando Torres is in the wrong sport. I didn't see any water in the penalty box!? Why's he diving every chance he gets? Torres booked for second dive!

Rio proved he's still the man for United by shackling Torres. Rio Ferdinand returned for Manchester United for the first time in two months. Rio Ferdinand runs over to shout at Torres for diving.
