Last-gasp Chicharito the hero again

Javier Hernandez confirmed his status as Manchester United's new hero with a brilliant winner to take the Carling Cup holders into the last eight of the competition courtesy of a 3-2 win over Wolves.

Hernandez came off the bench to secure victory in the last minute of normal time and keep alive United's quest to become the first side to win the trophy three times in a row.

Bebe, the relatively-unknown striker signed in the summer for £7.4 million from Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes, crowned his first start with a fortunate opening goal before George Elokobi equalised.
Park Ji-Sung made it 2-1 to the home side but Kevin Foley hauled Wolves level again before Hernandez's excellent finish.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy seven, and the first half in a quiet Old Trafford, with plenty of empty seats, was a dismal affair.
United's striker Gabriel Obertan and Federico Macheda were poor, the best chance coming when Macheda sent a shot straight at Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey after Bebe's scuffed centre ended up at his feet.

The second half opened with more apparent problems for United as Matt Jarvis rampaged down the right and sent over a ball to the far post that Steven Fletcher met with a cracking left-foot volley which went wide.

Darron Gibson gave United encouragement with a swerving free-kick that was on target, the only problem being that it swerved straight into Hennessey's arms.

Park looked certain to score when Michael Carrick feigned to shoot and instead played a delicious pass to set the South Korean free but Hennessey pulled off a stunning block.

It finally needed a touch of fortune - and an excellent decision by assistant referee Darren Cann - to see United take the lead. Bebe did well to muscle past Elokobi but his deflected cross went right over the Wolves keeper and dropped over the line. Foley thought he had headed the ball off the line but Cann waved his flag for a goal, and TV replays showed the World Cup final linesman had judged it perfectly.

No sooner had United taken the lead then Wolves equalised. Fabio's brilliant block denied Stephen Hunt but from the corner Elokobi rose superbly and thumped a header into the goal.
Macheda, of whom so much was expected, continued to disappoint when he hooked over from Bebe's astute pass - he should have scored.

Despite that miss the goals kept coming, first when Park put United 2-1 up. It was his driving run that took the ball into the heart of Wolves territory and it came back to him somewhat fortuitously after Macheda lost control, and Park placed the ball neatly into the corner of the net.

Once more, however, Wolves came back with a nice build-up involving Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and a flick from Fletcher to set up Foley who fired through Jonny Evans' legs past Ben Amos.

It could have been worse for United when Ebanks-Blake sidestepped Chris Smalling and hammered a terrific shot with a minimum of backlift only to see it skim past the upright.

With extra-time approaching Ferguson took off the tired-looking Bebe, and sent on the weekend's goalscoring hero Hernandez.

The young Mexican was immediately influential, sending Obertan sprinting in on goal but his finish was once again disappointing, flashed wide with only the keeper to beat.

Hernandez's class finally made the difference in the very last minute of normal time when he left two Wolves defenders in a heap and lifted the ball coolly over Hennessey.

Backstage: They showed Cena and Orton on a split-screen walking toward the ring for the main event.

Randy Orton’s music hit to bring out Orton to a somewhat subdued reaction. Cole plugged Fan Appreciation Day in Hartford on Saturday night as Orton completed his ring intro. Barrett had final instructions for Cena before the bell sounded.

WWE champion RANDY ORTON vs. JOHN CENA (w/Wade Barrett) — non-title match — winner selects referee for Orton vs. Barrett at Survivor Series

Cena called it a renewal of one of the great rivalries in Raw history. Orton stood his ground glaring across the ring to Cena. They eventually locked up and Orton knocked Cena down. Classic start selling an even match-up. They locked up again and Cena grabbed a headlock. Cena then ran over Orton, who came to his feet and took a deep breath. The feeling-out process continued with Cena driving Orton to the corner. He tried a bulldog, but Orton shoved him away. Orton then put a boot to Cena’s head and went on the attack while glaring down at Barrett. Cena tried his comeback routine early on and Orton had it scouted to duck down and avoid a flying shoulder tackle. Cena fell to the outside while Orton decked Barrett with a right hand on the floor. Orton glared at Barrett, who backed off as they cut to break.

Back from break, Cena was fading as Orton had him in a chinlock. Cena broke free with a show of strength before Orton landed a DDT for a two count. Orton glared back at Barrett before starting another methodical attack on Cena. Orton missed with a clothesline, though, and began his usual comeback routine. Cena rallied the fans and told Barrett You Can’t See Me before dropping the Shuffle on Orton. Cena measured Orton for the Attitude Adjustment, but Orton expectedly slipped out. Orton then did his comeback routine with the powerslam and IED facials. Barrett sold concern as Orton booted Cena on the ring apron and set up the spike DDT, but Cena back-dropped Orton over the top rope to the floor.

Barrett started to pick up Orton, but Cena ran to ringside and shoved Barrett down to the ground not wanting a DQ. Orton tried to sneak attack Cena, but Cena whipped Orton hard into the guardrail. Back in the ring, Cena went for a top rope guillotine drop and connected. Cena made a cover, but Orton kicked out. Cena came to his feet and the crowd chanted his name as he measured Orton. Cena wanted the AA again, but Orton grabbed the top rope and slingshot Cena across the top. Orton collected himself on the floor before slowly re-entering. Cena recovered and slapped on the STF as soon as Orton re-entered. Orton tried to make the bottom rope, but Barrett pulled the bottom rope away. Cena dropped the hold and screamed at Barrett.

Cena then re-entered the ring and took a dropkick from Orton. Orton followed right up with the spike DDT from the second rope and started to enter RKO world. Orton pounded the mat with his fists and stalked Cena, who wouldn’t come to his feet. Orton waited and waited before missing with the RKO. Cena tried the AA and connected this time. He made a cover, but Orton kicked out just before three. The crowd thought it was three, then booed as everyone reacted to the close nearfall.

Cena regrouped and walked over to Orton to pick up his lifeless body. Orton suddenly sprung to life and hit the RKO out of nowhere. Cena rolled out of the ring, though, and Orton caught his breath in the ring. Barrett slowly paced around ringside as the referee took forever to begin a ten count. Orton eventually lifted Cena’s dead weight back into the ring and re-entered. Orton stalked Cena again as the crowd became frightened when Orton set up for the Punt. Barrett suddenly yanked Cena to the outside and clotheslined him to the floor, causing the bell to sound. Cena was declared the winner via DQ, which was quite possibly the laziest finish on TV this year when Barrett could have done that 15 minutes earlier.

WINNER:
Cena via DQ at 15:36. Good back-and-forth match between Cena and Orton continuing their series of strong matches. That was before the lazy finish that just defies any logic. The match served as a means to an end of setting up Survivor Series, but WWE has done this way too often this year booking non-finishes to TV main events.
Post-match: Orton tackled Barrett and beat him down before Nexus stormed the ring to attack Orton. Cena then attacked Nexus and Barrett told Nexus to clear out of the ring. Barrett said he’s decided who the special referee will be…John Cena. The crowd was silent. Barrett said Cena will be a very impartial referee, so impartial that if Barrett does not win at Survivor Series, Cena will be fired. Barrett said that when he wins the WWE Title at Survivor Series, Cena will be relieved of any and all duties as part of Nexus.

Cena dropped down to the corner and thanked his lucky stars over and over. Cena then realized he would have to cost Randy Orton the title and stared across the ring. “Randy Orton is screwed,” Cole said. Cole closed the show at nine minutes past the hour saying Cena has no choice but to make sure Barrett is WWE champ at Survivor Series.

Backstage: And on with the show to a smiling Josh Mathews. He brought in WWE champ Randy Orton, who cut a three-sentence promo on John Cena’s predicament tonight.

Wade Barrett, Nexus’s music hit to bring out Barrett. Cena followed close behind as an unwilling servant. WWE champ Orton then came out and Justin Roberts handled the formal ring intros. Before the bell sounded, Barrett made it clear to Cena that if Barrett does not win this match, he fires Cena tonight.

WWE champion RANDY ORTON vs. WADE BARRETT (w/John Cena) — WWE Title match
Orton dominated in the first minute as Cena simply stood by non-reactionary on the outside several feet away from the ring. Some of the males chanted, “Fire Cena,” as Orton worked over Barrett. The chant gained momentum and the announcers ignored it. Barrett then tossed Orton to the outside, leading to a stare down between Cena and Orton. Barrett didn’t like Cena’s reaction to an opportunity, so he rolled out of the ring to challenge Cena with his eyes. Back in the ring, Barrett rocked Orton into the corner with kicks before Orton fired back with a clothesline. Barrett continued to work over Orton as Cena watched from a distance.

Barrett didn’t appreciate Cena’s lack of effort, so he screamed at him ringside. Orton snuck up behind Barrett and clotheslined him into the ring steps as Cena backed up to the announcer table. Orton stared down Cena, then rolled Barrett back into the ring and applied a chinlock. The match moved back to the floor where Barrett reversed a whip sending Orton flying into the ring steps. Back in the ring, Barrett landed three left hand jabs to Orton and made a cover for a two count. Barrett went to the second rope, paused, and delivered a flying elbow drop for another nearfall.

At 8:00, Barrett shoved a boot into Orton’s face in the corner as the camera continued to focus on Cena staring into the ring from ringside. Barrett continued to score nearfalls as the crowd waited for something to get excited about. Barrett slowly came to his feet and dragged Orton to the outside before ramming him head-first into the guardrail in front of a fan dressed as a clown and a man wearing a Peyton Manning jersey. The clown or Peyton shouted, “You suck!” toward Barrett as he rolled Orton back into the ring and slapped on a chinlock.

Orton sold a comeback, was cut off, then finally gave the audience some hope with right hand strikes, followed by a dropkick. Orton positioned Barrett on the second rope for his patented spike DDT, but Barrett slipped out and the ref was bumped. Barrett knocked down Orton with a clothesline as Barrett shouted at Cena to get on the ring apron. Orton suddenly bumped Barrett into the apron, bumping Cena off the apron to the floor. Nexus then stormed the ring and Orton tried to fight them off. Striker ominously said Barrett is going to be the new WWE champion. We know that’s not happening now.

Nexus held up Orton, who accepted right hand strikes from Nexus members. Cena suddenly stormed the ring and tackled Nexus members. Barrett knocked down Orton in the confusion, then Barrett screamed at Cena. Cena said that if Barrett gets DQ’ed, he loses. Barrett accepted the explanation, then went on the attack, but Orton made his comeback as the ref came back to life. Orton dropped Barrett with the spike DDT from the second rope before he started pounding the mat with his fists.

Suddenly, Cena snuck in the back door and scooped up Barrett. He dropped him with the Attitude Adjustment and the ref called for the bell. Barrett was announced as the winner via DQ, which drew silence since it was one of those groan-inducing, predictable cop-out finishes for Barrett to win. Cena grabbed the title belt and started to hand it over to Orton, who dropped Cena with the RKO. That drew a mild pop from the males. Orton celebrated with the title, then dropped Barrett with the RKO as Barrett tried to sneak attack him. The announcers tried to explain the finish and Cena working Barrett’s system as Orton celebrated. They replayed the key moments of the match as Cole said Barrett will be livid going forward. Orton held up the title belt in the ring as the show concluded.

WINNER: Barrett via DQ at 14:34, Orton retains the WWE Title.

Chicharito snatches win

Wayne Rooney may have been absent as he celebrated his 25th birthday, but his presence loomed large at the Britannia Stadium as Manchester United's faltering Premier League title challenge stuttered back into life.

Rooney was persuaded this week that Sir Alex Ferguson's men remain the team to beat, but an extraordinary few days at Old Trafford looked set for a miserable finish when Stoke substitute Tuncay hit a sublime 82nd-minute equaliser to cancel out Javier Hernandez's first-half header.

However, summer acquisition Hernandez found time to sweep in a late winner which ended a long wait for an away league victory and closed the gap on leaders Chelsea to five points.

Central to Rooney's push for a move away was a claim that the club, burdened with debt ever since the Glazer family's takeover, could no longer match his ambition by attracting the world's top players.

While that may be true to some extent, Hernandez is looking a more astute purchase by the game as he notched his fourth and fifth goals since joining from Guadalajara for around £7 million over the summer.

Facing away from goal, the little Mexican still managed to open the scoring in the 27th minute with the back of his head in what was a fine piece of finishing.

Gary Neville was then incredibly fortunate not to be sent off at the end of the first half when referee Andre Marriner declined to show him a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Matthew Etherington.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis will be understandably furious with the decision, but the fact remains that despite dictating play for large periods the Potters were unable to test Edwin van der Sar once until Tuncay's fine strike.

And that lack of cutting edge proved crucial when Hernandez reacted quickly to poke in the winner with four minutes left.

The home side had enjoyed a spell of pressure before United forged ahead through Hernandez. Nani worked a short corner with Patrice Evra and when Nemanja Vidic headed the ball back across the face of goal, the Mexican international was able to flick home his header despite facing away from goal.

Stoke responded well as they again dictated play and Neville became the first name in referee Andre Marriner's book for a clumsy challenge on Matthew Etherington. Neville was then extremely lucky not to see red after another mistimed challenge on Etherington.

Neville surprisingly reappeared with the rest of United's players at the break but was then humiliatingly instantly replaced by Wes Brown before the half could kick-off.

Pulis introduced Tuncay and Eidur Gudjohnsen in a bid to add more quality in the final third and the two combined in an 82nd-minute equaliser. Paul Scholes gave the ball away and after Kenwyne Jones and Gudjohnsen linked up, Marc Wilson swept a fabulous pass out wide to the Turk.

Tuncay cut inside onto his left foot to sweep a stunning finish over the head of Van der Sar and into the top corner. It was the first goal Stoke had managed past United since Mark Stein's double in a League Cup tie in 1993 and was well worth the wait.

Ferguson's men could write the book on late goals, however, and Hernandez was again the crucial man as he poked in Evra's mis-hit shot from five yards with just four minutes left.
